Give it a minute or so to really start, but this video is pretty awesome… (more…)

The Beatles In An Apple

There is no doubt that the first time you hear The Beatles‘ company is called Apple Corps, it creates a bit of confusion. Does that mean Steve Jobs owns The Beatles? No, but it is a fair assumption and why, when referring to The Beatles‘ company, people usually refer to it explicitly as Apple CORPS. In fact, there is quite a litigious history between the two, as Apple Corps kept trying to sue Apple for copyright infringement. This is seen as one of the reasons why The Beatles catalog has yet to appear on the iTunes store.
That hasn’t happened yet, but the Fab Four are going digital in the most novel of ways. The Beatles Limited Edition Stereo USB mimics the Apple Corps logo – it’s a green apple. This special edition – limited to 30,000 units – release contains the entire Beatles catalog, remastered in MP3 and FLAC format, as well as all the album art and 13 mini documentaries. Nothing is mentioned about any copyright protection (DRM).
This apple will cost $330 (AED1,200) and can be ordered from the EMI store. Alas, they are already sold out, though the store says ‘temporarily sold out’, so who knows? Maybe they will make more… Suffice to say this is the only legal way thus far to get digital Beatles songs, but this moves makes you wonder if a listing for the songs on iTunes and Amazon isn’t imminent.

Dear Andy, Love Mick

What does this letter from Mick Jagger to Andy Warhol teach us? Mick sounds like an awesome guy to get work from! Then again, who wanted to mess with Andy Warhol? He could paint your face on the inside of a toilet and still sell it for a fortune. (more…)

Interview With Muslim Musician Sami Yusuf

At just 29, Tehran-born Sami Yusuf has become one of the world’s most widely recognised Muslim performers, being heralded by some as ‘Islam’s biggest rock star’ and ‘the Muslim answer to Christian rock’.
His songs, which discuss Muslim life in the modern world and advocate peace and love, have made him enormously popular in the Middle East – his first two albums sold in the millions – while his London childhood helps him to connect to Western Muslim audiences. Now he’s working on his third album and has just released his new single, ‘You Came To Me’. (more…)

Not Your High School Cello

Diego Stocco, the sound designer with movies like Terminator Salvation and Transformers on his resume, modified a cello with a few extra parts, added his own touches and proceeded to record a catchy if rather gloomy song with it. He calls it the Experibass and explains the project a little on his site:
Few weeks ago I visited a luthier looking for instruments parts, I had an idea in mind for an instrument I wanted to build. My curiosity was to hear the sound of violin, viola and cello strings amplified through the body of a double bass. I came up with a quadruple-neck experimental “something” that I thought to call Experibass. To play it I used cello and double bass bows, a little device I built with fishing line and hose clamps, a paintbrush, a fork, spoons, a kick drum pedal and a drum stick.

Brutal Legend is the game I want this year. WANT. It has everything I desire:

- Jack Black’s voice
- The ultimate heavy and death metal soundtrack
- ‘New’ metal bands getting their punishment
and…
- Funny intro movies!
Take a look at the intro video from the game… (more…)

Don’t Do Drugs
What we have here is an example of how constant drugging and boozing will destroy you. And to do this, who better than Amy Winehouse? Word is she is apparently completely sober here as she attempts a bit of rapping. In all fairness, she’s just having a bit of fun, but I can honestly tell you that if you watch this, you can never ever undo it. This will be stuck in your head forever… (more…)

Fatboy Slim And the Phillipino First Lady
Shock! Scandal! Controversy! Obviously not. Fatboy Slim is not the kinda of guy who appears to court trouble. Sure, he’s had his share, but one is more inclined to lump in the same group as Moby, though his music is eternally more accessible and generally just better. My apologies to Moby fans, but the man generally makes lousy music with a couple of solid songs that work in movie soundtracks and elevators. His music is far too ‘earthy’ for my taste – as if he expects me to eat lettuce and hold a rabbit while listening. Not that Fatboy Slim encourages me to a carnivore state, but somehow Weapon Of Choice and Right Here, Right Now has never left me feeling guilty over a steak.
Look, Moby sucks. Fatboy Slim doesn’t.
What was I walking about again? Yes, Fatboy Slim and the First Lady. His new album, Here Lies Love, will apparently be about the former First Lady of the Phillipines, Imelda Marcos. (more…)

Dub FX – or This Is How You Beatbox
UPDATE: The entire article is WRONG! Well, some of it is. Ben Bowden contacted us via the comments – he is not the guy doing the performing. Instead he is the man behind the lens and responsible for the cool videos. So a slap to us for not researching properly! The performance is by Dub FX. Apologies for any confusion.
We have featured a few beatboxers on Pass 41 before, but this guy takes the cake the Mic. Ben Dowden Dub FX doesn’t just use his instrument-emulation skills as a party trick. He is a professional performer, happy to do anything from working the street to performing with other music stars. His website also states he is an artist and film maker.
Clearly a talented dude, and a hard-working one at that. You have to watch the first video to understand how he does this, but his only instruments are his vocal chords (and some help from a synth for vocal manipulation). So if anyone tells you that you can’t make a career out of making noises with your mouth (other than in politics, as a financial analyst or a Fox News reporter), show them this…
