Words In Motion

do-ya-feel-lucky

Kinetic Typography: elitist words for “moving letters”. Using letters in a visual sense is already a skill, now imagine making them move. Then imagine them being applied to the immortal quotes from equally immortal movies. You name it, someone has made it and dumped it on Youtube – a quick search revealed dozens of these videos.

I went a bit overboard, so after the jump are examples from The Matrix, Scarface, V For Vendetta, Pulp Fiction, Full Metal Jacket, There Will Be Blood, Fight Club, Trainspotting, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, The Devil’s Advocate, Twelve Monkeys, Ocean’s Eleven, Dirty Harry, Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas, Shaun Of The Dead, Dexter and The Dark Knight.

Warning: perhaps needless to say, but the language in most of these clips is not clean and family friendly. (more…)

The Wire: 100 Best Quotes

the-wireHere you go: ten minutes of video compiling the best quotes from epic Cops ‘n Thugs show The Wire. If you know this HBO classic, then you will appreciate it. If you don’t, best get out there and start watching! The whole crew is here: Omar’s streetwise nuggets, McNulty’s nihilism, Bubbles’ pavement wisdom, Avon Barksdale’s thug life, Stringer Bell’s high life and, of course, those witty little insights that makes Bunk the last person you would ever introduce to anyone decent. Ever.

Obviously, being The Wire, most of these quotes can best be described as ‘colourful’ as far as the language is concerned… Hit the jump for the video. (more…)

One Wet Veyron

drenched-veyron

The Bugatti Veyron – considering only 300 have been made and they cost around $2 million, it’s the last thing you’d want to drive into a large body of water, right? Alas, the driver of this one was not so lucky and apparently planted his car into a saltwater marsh when a low-flying pelican startled him while he was on his mobile phone, making him yank the steering wheel and land in the drink. That alone should a good reason why mobile phones and driving do not mix.

Note, though, the ‘apparently’, because something is fishy here (no pun intended). Wired and the Associated Press both looked at the event a bit more closely and some interesting facts stand out. First, the video of the Veyron being dragged out hit the mainstream press very quickly – perhaps a bit too quickly. Sure, it is a rare exotic sports car, but most of the globe hardly blinked when Eddie Griffin wrecked an Enzo, the equally-rare Ferrari, at a charity event two years ago.

That brings us to another strange point: the Veyron in the water is apparently owned by the same guy who holds the keys to that wrecked Enzo. He also owns a exotic car repair shop – and that Enzo, incidentally, is not so wrecked anymore… Coincidence? Wired thinks not. But who is to judge? All I want to declare is: Bugatti, if you give me a Veyron, I promise I will never crash it into a lake. Tthe tyre changes cost $10,000 a go – I probably won’t even drive it. I couldn’t afford to.

Game Mashups

game-mashups

You wouldn’t put The Terminator in 300, nor would you drop John McClane in Star Wars. And it’s pretty certain that Pirates of the Caribbean would have turned out very differently if the Ghostbusters were around. The point: some things are great on their own, but mix them up and the balance quickly evaporates. This very same law works in music too – for example, Celine Dion and Anastacia should never do a AC/DC cover. And Scorpion from Mortal Kombat would make short work of Donkey Kong. Don’t even get started on Sonic in Pacman(more…)

Suicide: Funny? Top Gear: Yes

top-gear

There is no end to the fans of Top Gear around the ITP offices and the show has really evolved the idea of being a show about cars to a skit show that happens to feature cars. Point in case: this fake commercial that the team made to show VW. Apparently British viewers were not impressed and now the UK’s Office Of Communication is taking a look into it.

Curious what all the fuss is about? Here’s the video… (more…)

Like They Never Were…

wrestler

Over the weekend I finally got to watch Hancock, chalking up yet another movie where the trailer completely misrepresented the film, subsequently turning me off from seeing it, whereas the final product was well worth the effort. In contrast is The Horsemen, where the trailer looked great and the movie was anything but that. It is simple enough: ignore the trailer and you should be fine. But watching trailers is part of the movie tradition. I just wish they would stop abusing our trust…

Still, redoing a trailer to mean something completely different is not hard. Take a look after the jump at two examples: Indiana Jones done 1950s style and The Wrestler in Grindhouse fashion… (more…)

Risk The Movie

riskNo, this is serious. Hasbro and Sony are making a movie based on the board game Risk. Sadly this is hardly news, since there are also movie adaptations coming out for Monopoly and Battleships. Stupid? You’re preaching to the choir. Still, somebody thinks that this is a great idea and that somebody happens to be Doug Belgrad, Columbia Pictures president:

“Hasbro has already seen tremendous success with Transformers and G.I. Joe and audiences have shown a great desire for films that bring to life everything that has made these franchise properties stand the test of time.”

Ah, yes, good point Dougie. Action figures, board games – all the same thing, really: crap parents buy for their brats… Surely if one makes for a half-decent movie (and we’re being liberal here), the other is a snap! To be fair, though, Risk probably has more potential than Battleship at actually working as a movie. Alas, nobody has taken the trend the other way. Where’s our real, working Jumanji board game?

Here’s Stephen Colbert and Jeff Goldblum’s audition for Battleship: (more…)

Who Needs Drivers?

bot-car

Robots are definitely taking over. I am not sure what has been happening, but over the past few years these machines have gone from obscure ideas to working models. Well, perhaps a bit longer than a few years and admittedly inventions are actually around a lot longer than what we see them publicly. But still, it’s come along very quickly, hasn’t it? (more…)
