UFC: No More Lesnar?

When former WWE wrestler Brock Lesnar stepped into the UFC Octagon the first time, nobody knew what to expect. Now we all have absolute clarity: after four UFC fights in the heavyweight division, Brock has only lost one – and he redeemed himself by getting a rematch against Frank Mir and decisively beating him. Also, Brock holds the UFC Heavyweight Championship belt after beating Randy Couture. The fact that Frank Mir took him out quickly in their first fight – less than 2 minutes into the first round – and by their second match-up (Lesnar’s fourth UFC fight) Mir clearly underestimated Lesnar and lost in the second round, shows that Lesnar adapts and is an amazing athlete. At the very least he raises the bar for the ever-evolving UFC.

Unfortunately that might all be at an end. Lesnar has taken ill and has apparently gone into surgery for an intestinal problem. Whether the latter has happened is not clear, but a friend reports the man is back at home and recovering. He is yet to make a decision about his future, but it is speculated that he might not fight in the UFC again – much to the dismay of the sport’s head honcho Dana White. The brain-deficient side of UFC fandom will probably cheer this, as Lesnar is not even trying to be popular with the fans. But anyone who enjoys the sport will know this is bad news, even echoed by the next man he was supposed to defend his belt against, Shane Carwin:

I am sure most of you know I am not the leader of the Lesnar Fan Club. That being said, antics or not, he is OUR UFC HWT Champion. He beat a future Hall of Famer to keep that belt and he NEEDS our prayers and good thoughts right now … Brock has a wife, kid, and friends that depend on him to make their lives better. You do not have to support Brock and his antics but you should have respect for the human side of what is happening here.

This is the latest in a string of injuries plaguing the UFC at the moment. According to the Yahoo MMS blog, Georges St. Pierre, the intimidating Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida with his forward-kicking karate style are all on the bench. Oh well, at least we will always have those no-holds-barred fights from the newcomers.

Let’s hope Brock gets well soon – he deserves to defend his title.
